Secux Neo X: A Massive Bulky Brick

secux neo x hardware wallet

Out the box, it’s quite shocking how solid and thick the Secux Neo X is. Notably enough compared to other wallets to comment on.

And saying that, this thing is heavy. For those who prefer a brick in the hand, Neo X may be your answer.

There’s also a slightly hallow feeling to it, so it’s questionable if the size is necessary for functionality.

The Secux Neo X comes in space grey aluminum metal, which is a hard choice to go wrong with.

My favorite part about the device is the large 2.8 inch LCD color touchscreen. It displays NFTs well when they choose to appear, and can be saved as a background.

In terms of quality, the device lacks the premium feel of a competitors, which can be seen through both the massive line going around the device, as well as small button lacking a smooth press.

The 600 mah battery is a decent size, and can last for months. Having it allows the device to connect via Encrypted Bluetooth (Bluetooth 5 BLE) connection.

Normal Experience Setting Up Secux Neo X

Off the bat, Secux states the Neo X works on all modern ios and android phones.

Turn on the Neo X device.

Click ‘set up as a new wallet’.

secux neo x seed phrase options

Choose either a 12 or 24 word seed phrase, with 24 words giving you the most protection.

secux neo x offers

As with most wallets, write down all the seed words on paper or preferably metal.

Re-enter these words on the device and we’re good to go.

Download the Secux mobile app to get started.

Secux App: An Unfinished Buggy Product

secux crypto wallet app

Although nothing outstanding, the app UI and UX is straightforward.

To test the app, receiving my Solana was easy enough. And sending was the same.

There’s also the usual dapp section allowing users to connect to their favorite crypto apps safely.

One part that was hard for me to get past was multiple bugs that occurred in app, making the experience feel unfinished. And as a $179 product, that is not a positive sign.

I transferred over some Solana NFTs which never showed up. A few back and forth emails later helped finally make the NFTs appear in my profile.

Perhaps even more worrying, every time the ‘getting started’ button was pressed, the app would completely crash.

Is nobody using this app? Are the developers even testing??

Token Support Is Lacking On Secux App

secux neo x nft support

As for supported tokens, secuX states they support over 5000 different tokens. On top of tokens, there’s also NFT support for Ethereum, BNB, Polygon and Solana.

But as stated, it’s not always certain which chains will actually work with the device.

Secux Neo X Security: No Hacks, But Lacks Open Source

secux neo x security

The Secux Neo X uses the Infineon SLE 97 German-engineered secure element chip. Although slightly outdated as a EAL5+ chip, also seen in the Ledger X, this chip is more than qualified to keep crypto safe.

It handles all cryptographic tasks such as generating private keys and seed phrases.

One concern this that after a thorough search online, there’s no evidence of a third party audit on their website.

And after asking the team about their lack of open sourcing on the wallet and app, here is the team’s response:

“We want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that it’s important to understand that “open source” doesn’t always equate to “more secure””.

Secux Neo X Reputation & Reviews

Secux technology was created in 2018, launched products in 2019 and have been building ever since. The company is based in Taiwan, with offices in Germany and the United States.

The entire team bios can be found on their website, with some solid experience in tech.

Secux holds a 3.1 out of 5 on Trustpilot, which is below average. More specifically for the Neo X, a 4 out of 5 on amazon.com.

Here’s what users are saying about the Secux Neo X:

  • Easy to setup and use, come with charging cables, all you need for normal use.

    JT
  • The wallet REQUIRES a phone app in order to use it. There’s no desktop alternative, you have to use a phone app.

    John Harpur
  • I was very impressed with the construction and fit-and-finish of this crypto-wallet.

    M. Alan
  • Support answers my support request with general blanket answers and that doesn’t help.

    Ant-on

To get a better idea of Secux’s reputation, consult their socials, metrics and read what other users are saying.

Contacting support is wee bit tedious, as the brand lacks a chat bot on the website. Go to the ‘support’ tab, click ‘contact us’ and then send in a support form.

Alternatively, go in app by navigating to ‘setting’ and ‘customer support’.

Final Verdict: Secux Neo X Not Worth The Price

holding secux neo x cold wallet

This was a difficult product to review. Not only because the device is complicated, but it also just feels like an unfinished product.

The bulkiness and heaviness is unnecessary, especially when compared to other hardware wallets it competes with.

My biggest worry apart from the device itself is the app. It’s not often we find multiple bugs in a first time testing session.

So should you buy a Secux Neo X?

At it’s premium price point of $179 USD, it is hard to suggest someone to buy it when you could pay the same for a Ledger X, two Trezor Safe 3’s or even 3 Tangem wallets.
