Shieldfolio Stonebook: A Simple, Yet Effective Crypto Backup

This small Sheildfolio crypto notebook contains 80 tear resistant pages which allow you to store seed phrases, private keys and passwords offline.

I say tear resistant because although the pages feel tough, with a ton of effort it’s possible to rip.

We can store multiple seed phrases in one place, instead of having mutliple different metal backups which can easily be lost or separated. 

In the bundle set, we’re also given something called the ghost pen. Channeling your inner Casino Royale plot twist, this pen has invisible ink, and the only way to reveal it is with UV light, along with some other stuff around the room so lets not go there.

A Beginner Friendly Setup For Everyone

When it comes to seed backups, the Stonebook is by far the easiest and most streamlined to set up. 

If you only grab the Stonebook, regular ink is best. Due to a material called stone paper, which is 80% limestone and 20% ecological binder, for you nerds out there (me included), the paper is quite resistant. We’ll dive into that soon.

To take the security a set further, we can perform step 1 of writing in seed phrases and passwords with ink. And you’re going to make them fake.

Then cheekily take your ghost pen and write your actual information over the ink ones. Turn out the lights, and you’ll only see the correct information using the UV light on the cap of the ghost pen.

How Durable Is the Stonebook Really?

This crypto seed phrase backup is water resistant, tear resistant, oil and chemical resistant and non-biodegradable.

Now the only downside is that you won’t want to be summoning Charmander anywhere near it, as fire is super effective.

So to get around that, a fireproof safe would come in handy, if budgets allow for it. That would also solve the problem that paper isn’t very strong against crush or pressure, something that should be considered with a backup.

One consideration here is that the notebook is a bit weak against sunlight. So it’s highly advised to keep it stored somewhere in the shade and hidden away, which you’ll probably want to do with important information anyways.

A final note here is that it’s incredibly easy to accidentally leave the ghost pen UV light on. This made the battery die fast, with no replacement. Do consider this before choosing invisible ink.
