CoolWallet Pro: An Innovative Take On Bank Cards

coolwallet pro device

Taking a look at the $149 credit card sized device, you may have thought it’s just a card.

But not so fast!

This thing actually holds a lithium battery somehow. On the bottom, you can see the two metal connector pins which go into the charger.

The reason for this device being digital is that the card connects to your mobile device via encrypted Bluetooth.

The card is quite thin, but didn’t snap or get damaged when bent.

At the top of the card is a ‘built-in paper screen’, which seems to be using e-ink tech.

And a feature which is hard to realize at first is a circular groove in the middle of the deivce, which has to be one of the thinnest buttons in existence.

Why Does CoolWallet Pro Keep Dying During Setup?

coolwallet pro setup

Be aware that Coolwallet Pro is compatible with both Android and IOS.

Firstly, download CoolWallet app and start charging the Pro in the meantime.

Select Coolwallet Pro.

Connect the card using bluetooth and start a firmware update.

Click ‘create new wallet’.

We’re given two setup options: generate by app or by card.

Then chooose either to generate either a 12, 18 or 24 word seed phrase. 24 is always recommended for added security.

Write down all the words on the given paper sheet.

Re-enter the words and we’re taken to the app.

Now when selecting generate by card, we’re given random numbers instead of words.

Something we’ve never seen before.

Saving you our frustration, the wallet died in the middle of setup.

coolwallet pro failed setup

This has literally never happened before, since all devices usually have enough charge out of the box to last through setup.

Do note that if we had finished setup, we’d need to manually add up every single number, which would’ve been 24 five digit numbers!

Anyways, we tried to turn the card back on, charge with the short cable and continue, but then it died again while charging.

Womp womp!

Realising the card was plugged in the wrong way and can only charge on one side, words were re-entered and finally gave access to the app.

Well that was frustrating…

CoolWallet App: A Smooth, Pain Free Crypto Wallet

coolwallet app

The UI and UX in-app has everything we need.

Start by adding the tokens to the ‘manage’ list.

If you don’t own any crypto yet, there’s a way to purchase in app with Moonpay.

To add crypto to the wallet, tap ‘receive’ and copy the address.

Its also easy to add custom tokens that aren’t listed, but actually this is something wallet apps should do automatically.

It’s a bit of a pain being forced to search for token addresses, and not all users have that knowledge.

Sending is easy as well.

Tap ‘send’ on the desired token, enter the receiving address and choose how much crypto to send.

Click confirm, tap biometrics and connect the Pro card. Tap the card button 4 times to confirm the transaction and it will send.

Users can also swap, stake, view tends and prices, as well as recent news articles in the Cryptoverse.

coolwallet pro app token trends

The ‘explore’ tab allows us to connect to dapps inside CoolWallet. For example, we can connect straight to Magic Eden through the app.

The ‘history’ tab is super transparent, showing all transactions flowing in and out of the wallet.

Decent Token Support, But CoolWallet Go Lacks NFTs

coolwallet app token support

Coolwallet supports 35 blockchains and over 12,000 tokens as they continually grow their ecosystem.

For NFT users, there’s currently only support for Ethereum at the moment.

CoolWallet Security Record: 11 Years With One Hiccup

coolwallet security

Coolwallet has an exceptional track record, cementing 11 years without any hacks.

To keep their tech secure, CoolWallet uses an EAL 6+ secure element chip, which handles all cryptographic tasks such as generating private keys.

This works in tandem with the button, using it as a signer to click and confirm transactions on screen.

CoolWallet Pro utilizes end-to-end bluetooth encryption to ensure that all data transmitted between your CoolWallet and your mobile device is completely secure.

Having fully transaprency, Kraken Security Labs found a flaw while auditing the CoolWallet S.

“The Android application stores the wallet’s PIN, pairing password, and hardware seed in plaintext.”

Welp that’s not good, but action was taken to improve security.

To read more into this discovery, check out Kraken’s statement, as well as CoolWallet’s response blog.

To back up their security statements, the company was audited by Eshard, stating there are no vulnerabilities to fault, side-channel or software attacks.

As for open sourcing, in May 2023, the brand open sourced their secure element chip code for the CoolWallet Pro, which is great news for transparency.

Final Thoughts: Not A Practical Device In 2025

traveling with coolwallet pro

There’s a lot to say about the Pro, so here’s my thoughts.

It’s nice to see brands get creative with their designs, and this one is no exception.

Who knew a screen, button and battery could all fit into a credit card? Pretty crazy achievement.

But here’s what seriously annoyed me about the device:

  1. The short battery life is a nuisance, which proved true when my wallet died twice.
  2. The screen shut off way too fast while using it without any option to change the screen timeout in app.
  3. For the button, when using the card with one hand to confirm transactions, I could feel the card bending.
  4. Lacking data that shows on screen while making transactions.
  5. Everything just felt slower with the CoolWallet Pro when compared to the CoolWallet Go wallet. When I say everything, I mean everything. Firmware, transactions, you name it.

So should you buy the CoolWallet Pro?

If you could guess by my statements above, I would not.

I’m a huge fan of the CoolWallet Go for a simple wallet similar to Tangem.

But if you want a screened device, for $149 just get a Ledger X, Trezor Safe 5 or even a Trezor Safe 3 and a Ledger S Plus to diversify holdings into two separate wallets.

Now we’re talkin!

But if you want to grab one, check the link below.

What the difference between CoolWallet Pro and Go?

The CoolWallet Go is an NFC signing device. Tap it on your phone to confirm transactions.

CoolWallet Pro has a screen, button and battery. This technically makes the device safer, but I had a lot to say in my review of the Pro, specifically about it’s miniscule battery life, slow speeds and quick timeout.

In my non expert opinion, the CoolWallet Go is a massively better experience overall.

Is CoolWallet Pro open source?

Yes, you can find the info on their blog here.

Is CoolWallet Pro compatible on all devices?

CoolWallet Pro is only available on mobile through iOS and Android.

What if I lose my CoolWallet Pro device?

If you generate through seed phrase, you can back up by both card and seed phrase, which is preferable for added security.

What is the expiry or shelf life of the CoolWallet Pro?

It’s generally standard for screened cold wallet devices to last between 3-5 years.

Battery life on this card may be even shorter though.

Is CoolWallet Pro safe and secure?

CoolWallet Pro has a screen, which makes it safer than screenless devices. That way we can check transactions on both devices to spot any inconsistencies.

The company has a decent track record other than some issues with the CoolWallet S device.
